Last Friday, her life and her family were torn apart by an Israeli shell. They were enjoying an evening on the beach in Gaza when the shell landed

Pictures of Hoda’s targedy have been beamed around the world. Her frantic screams, her running to the body of her father, her calling out his name as she writhed on the sand, all, have dominated the Arabic and international media ever since

We arrived outside her simple home in Gaza. A large mourning tent had been set up outside. It was festooned with the green flags of Hamas. The organisation paid for the tent, and for food for the three days of mourning. The whole neighbourhood had turned out to show their respects  to the dead

Hoda had shared the platform with the local cameraman who had filmed her tragedy. Someone had even seen fit to replay the video of the incident. Hardly what this devastated little girl needs, you might think

She was hugged and kissed by the president, who offered to adopt her

The process has started. Her tragedy is being quickly exploited by the politicians. All of them, rushing to associate themselves with her plight

Her expression was blank. Her uncle ushered us down the narrow passage alongside her house, into the little garden created by her father. It is an oasis of green grass and bright red flowers,. a beautiful haven from the densely packed and dusty chaos that is Gaza

In a soft, faltering voice she told me that she did. She now wants to take care of her dead father’s garden, a kind of tribute to his memory

When I asked her what happened she seemed obsessed with the nature of the injuries inflicted by the shrapnel. In graphic detail she listed exactly what had happened to the bodies of her loved ones. I was shocked. Her blank expression and these dreadful details. After that she seemed to run out of steam. Her words stopped flowing. “How do you feel?” I asked. “Sad” she replied. “Do you believe the Israelis when they say it was a mistake?” I persisted. “No” she said looking down at the grass

It has happened before in Palestine. The child victims of the conflict with Israel have been turned into icons of the Palestinian struggle. Mohammed Al Dura, the little boy shot by Israeli soldiers while cowering with is father in 2000, is the most notorious example. Images of his death became the signature of the early years of the Intifada. His picture was reproduced on a thousand posters, and spread across the Arab world

Meanwhile Hoda is still in shock. Still staring blankly out at the world she no longer understands

A well known child psychologist in Gaza told me that to lose a parent in such a way and to witness it, is something that Hoda will never recover from. It will haunt the rest of her life. She needs urgent medical help and professional counselling

From what I saw yesterday, I’m not sure she is gong to get it

(get it:  Understand, usually after some initial difficulty)
